 Post subject: Rudder issue

Had my first hiccup in a little over 200 hours. We were surfing and the steering out of the blue got real tight, not only turning left(prop rotation). Got the boat out of the water and the rudder shaft was split almost in half. First thought was that I must have hit something but prop is perfect. Has anyone heard of this? Have a great dealer that said they never heard of it so they are going to battle with Malibu to get it replaced under warranty.

I am very curious as well. I will let you know when the dealer calls me back. The only thing I can think, which I could be wrong, is when we are heavily weighted for surfing it has always been tuff to turn left. Which I was told it’s from the prop spin, I could only think over time that it just eventually broke from the strain of the sunken boat.

I certainly hope not as I have to crank damn hard left to hold the line when we're sacked out surfing too...

But that shouldn't put shear force on that part unless there's an alignment issue and you'd think it would be common then. WEll let us know what you hear.

If it is sacked out enough that the entire gate is under water when extended it acts like a huge rudder which is pretty hard to fight against.

I am still waiting to hear back from Malibu. They wanted the rudder back, which as of Friday the dealer was still waiting on a rma.

Yea, my rudder fell off between 200 and 250 hours (2015 T23). The dealership suspected it had been installed wrong. It was replaced under warranty, even after the warranty period. I had to stand on the swim deck with a paddle steering for 20 miles to get back to the marina. By the way, these boats go pretty straight at about 13 mph, straight enough they can be steered with a paddle anyway.

Talked to the dealer yesterday, the warranty claim is still pending. Malibu might have sent it back to the rudder manufacture. Hopefully hear something back in the next couple of weeks. I paid to get the new rudder on. So boat isn’t sitting in the garage on 90 degree days. Not much boating days left with warm water
