I pulled the new cable tonight. Even on the trailer I can tell it is so much better. I was hoping to not have to pull the kick panel, but I couldn't make the turn without doing so. The only other hard parts were reconnecting the 1 1/8" nut (1/8th turns in tight space) and removing the excessive amount of tape I used.

Thanks for all the info guys.
My new cable hasn't come yet. But I have been trying to figure out how to get a "small" 1 1/8" wrench. The only adjustable ones I could find are huge. And the normal chrome ones tend to be super long. Then I realized my collet wrenches for my router fit! Hopefully my cable will come today and I can get back on the water this weekend.

Any benefit to going longer?

The longer cable was to ensure I could easily loop around a fairly large sub enclosure under the steering wheel. It may not have been necessary but there aren't any adverse effects. I found removing the tape and reconnecting the cable were the most difficult steps, too.
