So who buys a boat without cleats?!?! Aparently me... Twice. Neither my last boat (a Malibu sportster) nor my current A22 had cleats from the factory. On my sportster I used 4" Attwood popup cleats. On my A22 I ordered Attwood 6" cleats. The plan is to put them at the "normal". All of which look easy to do except the one right by the helm which will require removing lots of trim. I made a simple template to help with drilling and taped it to the boat in position. Then drilled backwards to get through the gel. Then I drilled forward to finish the hole. I also countersunk the holes to help prevent spider cracks. I also used the Attwood backing plates to improve the strength. And seeing as the fiberglass on the top deck looks thinner than my old sportster I am glad I did! One done 3 to go! |

Looks great! My boat has 2 pair but I'd love some in the bow. You make it look so easy so maybe I'll attempt it this winter. |

It really isn't bad but drilling holes in a boat is a little unnerving. I am considering some 4" cleats on the bow too. Gonna live with these four for a while and see how I feel. Salem |

So I found happy got around to finishing this project. All standard cleat locations can be reached with an adjustable wrench. Even the one right below the helm can be reached using the small cut out where the iPod cable comes out. I did do some disassembly on the starboard stern cleat but not sure it was necessary. Definitely worth adding cleats if you don't have them already! |
