Hi Bish,
Hope this helps I havnt posted photos on here before so I hope they work ok. My Axis is a 2011 but I missed out on that upgraded brckt too.

Where did u get that piece of alloy and how much did it run u to have it made? Don't see why that wouldn't hold up as well as the factory piece as long as it stays tight.

I went down to the local steel yard and found a off cut and after bringing it home and marking it i took it back for them to drill the hole. Cost about $30 but a few hours stuffing around. Just make sure the alloy peice sits hard up against the bracket and then mark it down through the cup holder.
