About an hour into a nice 5mph mothers day cruise around the lake with friends the smell of electrical burning became very distinct. I reached for the extinguisher and on my way back to the driver seat to check the gauges, I saw a small puff come from the factory Sony deck.

The light jazz stopped and so did the smell. The clock continued to work for about 30 minutes, then it went blank too. Anyone else have one of these die with only 2 years of use? I'm technically the 1st registered owner of this boat, but even still the 1 year Sony warranty expired 2 weeks ago.

Any suggestions on the next deck? I had a Fusion Audio deck in the last boat and it seemed really well built and very waterproof.

If its the factory deck should it still be covered under the factory boat warranty? im new to the boat owner world but if its anything like cars it should be covered? i would still ask sony sometimes if its close 1 or 2 weeks they can still cover it .. always worth a shot

That SUX! Are you sure that it was just the head unit causing the issue/electrical burning smell?
If so, I agree with amsugg. Try contacting Sony directly and they might handle it with a free replacement.
I would still double check the wiring/conections just for peace of mind.

Absolutely sure. The smell is still coming from the CD slot. I got the boat for a ridiculous price at auction from the liquidation of the local AXIS dealer. I feel bad pressing my warranty case on a 2010 (purchased April 2011).

Axis has been great about other items like a blown seat skin seam and the tach directly mailing them to me. I can buck up a few bucks on a stereo, especially if there is a nice upgrade option...but I have not found one yet. I suspected wiring for a few minutes, but it has been working fine for months since the last change - moved the power from the key to the ACC switch.

BTW - the blown seat seam was definitely caused by hyperlite system boots. Be careful! I always flip one of the corner cushions over and use that 'step' coming back into the boat.

A little off topic but you wear your system boots in the boat AND step on the vinyl? That's no different from passengers wearing shoes in the boat except shoes are dirtier.

Agreed, but shoes are already banned from my boat. The system boots snuck by in a technicality. The system boots have hard corners and a more rigid sole than shoes (I would say more like wearing work boots on you boat).

I have the Kobalt boots and put them on and take them off on the platform. Love the feel of the system.

I think I found the problem. The USB input cord had been 'neglected' by the bank while the Axis was in their care. The cord had been open in a puddle. I noticed this last year when the cord wouldn't work for a friends iPod. I rarely use any iDevices anymore, so forgot all about it and have been happily using bluetooth over AUX in. I just checked and the rust had finally bridged over all four pins. I just bought a replacement on amazon for $180. Do neglect the small problems....they get bigger!
