I know nothing about drones. Is there a drone that will automatically follow a surfer ? I ask because it’s usually just my wife and I. Also , do they land automatically ? I know these are probably newb questions...but hey...that’s what I am. TIA

I'm a drone rookie, but the answer to # 1 is a definite yes. The answer to # 2 is yes, but probably not on a boat. You kind of want to know what you're doing before you start flying over water.

Here's a link to a video of a drone "locked on" to a surfer (also a skier and wakeboarder):

Surfer at 1:06 and 1:17 Skier at 1:21 (32 mph) wakeboarder at 3:27

The Phantom 4 from DJI will do both of those things. My Father-in-law has one and it's very nice. It will follow you around, and land on the boat, but I would probably have it hover and grab it. I'm sure you can find tons of videos on youtube. It's not water proof, and close to $1000 so I'd be careful.

So I got a DJI Spark for Christmas. I plan to use it on the boat when it warms up. Not sure I'd just use the "return to home" feature to land on a boat (as that is often 10-20 feet off not even including boat movement during the flight), but if there isn't any chop, it would be very easy to land it manually on the sundeck.

I don't think I'd attempt to drive the boat and be in charge of the drone at the same time. But you could if you put it in the air, locked it on to the boat, then drove the boat for 10 minutes, stopped the boat, and landed the drone manually.
