I have been eyeballing the phantom for a while now. I was also looking at the 3drobotics iris. That's cool that you have one and are using it to get some wakeboard shots. Keep posting about your experience with it. Can you lock the altitude in the software? I was hoping that there would be some way to get it to gps follow a signal of some sort. It has a return to home built in if it goes out of range, but that probably doesn't work for the boat. This may still need some time before it's ready for full boat follow autonomous flight...but very cool. Keep us posted. Thanks!
With a standard set up you can not lock in an altitude, however DJI does have a few way point systems. I don't have a way point system but my understanding of how the system works is you choose destinations, times, altitudes, how long at each destination, ect and then its able to follow the given instructions autonomously from take off to landing. As far as I know right now there is no software for it to do an autonomous following of a gps signal. the way the return to home feature works is once power is turned on it goes threw a series of checks and relays the info threw a sequence of blinking green and red lights. once 6 or more gps satellites have been communicated with it records its current gps location and sets this location as the return to home location. so obviously a moving boat this will not work, but sitting still, anchored, it will come close enough for you to recover it. the return to home function is only triggered by 1 of two options first is a toggle switch on the remote, second is loss of signal from the remote. (ie battery failure in controller, or beyond 1000 meter limit of stock controller)
